This is probably an almost mandatory application for anyone learning Swedish at a serious level, and for about all Swedes, as most Swedes come in contact with English regularly. The current version now runs native on the iPad, a huge improvement compared to previous versions.

Having used about 6 or 7 Swedish-English dictionaries for the iPhone, this is easily the most comprehensive, with all the necessary grammatical information for each word as well as expressions or terms using the word, and translations for different contexts. Well worth the price, which seems comparable to a paper version. A couple complaints, however: Pronunciation (IPA) is only available for English words, which is kind of annoying if youre attempting to learn English Also, it uses a slow scrolling system for moving towards the correct word as you type the word youre searching for. A simple elimination of the non-relevant words would speed up the application considerable. Its somewhat clumsy as is.

Why on earth does such a good, and expensive, dictionary not give the gender of swedish words? Otherwise the dictionary is excellent!

As a Swedish-American I have previously wasted money on several dictionaries for around $10 but determined that they miss many common Swedish words. This dictionary has not let me down once. It is not cheap, but if you want a complete dictionary this is the one to get. I only have one wish for improvement. It would be nice to also have a way to print.

UPDATE: This mediocre app just got worse… The first downgrade is that there is now no cursor when you click in the search field. This is particularly inconvenient for an app that will not look up plurals, past tense, or any other grammatical suffixes in the first place. Now when I want to delete the ending of a pasted Swedish word, I cant even see whether Im actually in the search field! Also, the main font is now light and small and difficult to read. Perhaps theyre trying to make it look more like iOS 7? Not good for a dictionary! The final insult is that now apparently there is a NEW app that is the identical dictionary, but with a "better" user interface! So now they want me to give them more money for a rather expensive app so that they can include the features that should have been there originally? I cant even find any information about what these new features are. Norstedts clearly has no concept of building good will with their customers. ORIGINAL REVIEW: This is certainly the most comprehensive Swedish – English dictionary youll find in the App Store. It includes copious usage examples to help you understand the words as they are actually used. As an app, however, it leaves something to be desired. The app wont look up words that you paste into the search field unless they match exactly - cant detect plurals as some other dictionaries do, for instance. It only works in portrait mode (rather inconvenient because I do most of my reading in landscape). Not only that, but it only works in "upright" portrait mode, so you cant use this dictionary while charging your iPad! This is also a case of false advertisement as the screenshots in the App Store show landscape mode. Did they actually take the time to make graphics in landscape mode without allowing this mode in the app? (Update: this was fixed.) Also, there appears to be no hyper-linking within the dictionary. There are many instances of "see other word" and you cant click through to the other word! Additionally, it is very difficult to select individual words in an entry, so even if you want to copy and paste the "other word" for search it is none-too-easy. Even as a dictionary it leaves a bit to be desired. It has instances of what I would term "etymological translation." For instance, "medmänsklighet" is translated as "brotherly feeling." Even Google translate manages the much more elegant translation "humanity." Also it gives no indication of gender or plural forms. I really hope the creators of this app will put a little more time into the iOS version of the dictionary, as this would be a great service to students of Swedish. I await the updates with great anticipation!
